Diving from Victoria Falls

While recovering from my shoulder surgery, I got a call if I wanted to be part of the team who would work on a project in Zambia and Zimbabwe. Cliff diving from Victoria falls sound crazy right?! I was so ready for this I could hardly wait for it!

Two world class cliff divers, Orlando Duque of Colombia and young gun, Jonathan Paredes of Mexico joined as a team. The first of shooting day I was in the water with my water housing and Canon EOS 1DX attached with EF 14mm f2.8 II lens. Initially I was a little bit nervous to get in to the Zambezi river- the warnings around our lodge "be aware of crocodiles" didn't leave me cool. There were a few local boys swimming around and they told me it was OK, so I jumped in. On the way back from the gorge, a friend photographer almost stepped on a green mamba. I was a few meters behind him.. I don't think I need to explain just how scared we were. From that moment on, I was watching my every step. For me it felt like I was living in the National Geographic channel!

Second day was the most important as Orlando and Jonathan were diving from a 30-meter cliff. Here you need to be ready as they don't dive from such heights very often. Looking at the waterfall, I decided to stay on the left side to get them on the water so that they would be really visible. If you get them on the rock, you barely see them or you need to look really closely to find the diver. I was lucky with the light and caught a little bit of rainbow in my photo. I was really happy with the result despite the fact that Jonathan jumped once from 30 meters and Orlando jumped three times!

Zambia was special for me as this is the Africa I was looking for. I have been in South Africa several times before but this is different! I love it!
