In the past years my winter season started as early as August with some jobs for ski companies and then the first ski race in Soelden. This year was different as I was working on other projects which don’t involve snow at all. I welcomed this change after so many years in the snow.
That was until a couple of weeks ago, when I got a call from ski cross world campion Filip Flisar saying he saw some photos I took of an air race pilot very early in the morning and that he would like to produce something similar. We agreed on getting together as soon I recovered from my shoulder surgery, so last weekend we headed to the Stelvio Pass glacier in Italy.
Shooting on the glacier at 5:30am is not an easy thing to organise as the lifts only start working at 8am. So Filip organised everything with the owner of the ski resort and we rode in a snowmobile with a driver to shuttle our gear and, of course, to shuttle Filip after every run. Me and my assistant, Jure, set the lights as Filip set the course and we got started.
I was shooting with a Canon EOS-1D X and EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lenses. I was pleased with how accurate the autofocus was in low light conditions. We had approximately half an hour to do the job, with perfect light for about ten minutes.
We were both happy with the result and we had a really good time together as Filip has a great sense of humour.
